While you probably already know the Foo Fighters and their cool song, “Learn to Fly,” we’re actually presenting some “flu fighters” to face the common cold and make it fly away from you, your family, and your home. T is for Teas: Rose, lavender, or ginger, anyone? Herbal teas can particularly and cheaply help to ward off the common cold. Hariharan (2018) informs how “tisanes can serve as decongestants and unblock nasal passage, helping breathe easier when one has a common cold or a stuffy nose; and its advantages for maintaining brain health, type II diabetes and blood pressure” (p. 78). R is for Routines: No, not militaristic-type regimens, but Heid (2018) specifically advocates “well-established lifestyle changes—stuff like washing hands, exercising regularly and getting plenty of sleep” (http://time.com/5446498/does-echinacea-work/ ) to sneak away from the common cold. It worked HELLA well for Snow White, right? The article also infers that “sharing isn’t caring” when it comes to sharing pens. Although we often remember to sanitize and wash hands, we tend to pass pens around school, work, and home, which is a major “no no!”

Speaking of routines, a 2015 article from Health & Fitness Magazine also suggests other effective, old school methods to enhance immunity and beat the common cold. For example, “fasting a few days in a week, doing meditation, and taking a quick bath with cold water. Also mentioned are having a healthy breakfast, keeping feet warm and dry, and laughing” (p. 42). I’m too way much of a wimp to do the cold water one, but I’m all about my nightly oil rituals as well as laughing the morning mania away while preparing my eggs, bagels, granola, Greek yogurt, and tootie fruity for a big brazen breakfast!

E is for Echinacea: No, that’s not the new baby name for the Kardashian’s next child. Echinacea belongs to the daisy family and has kept its hotspot as one of the most popular herbs in medical practice to curb the common cold. Experts recommend that it should be administered orally according to licensed manufacturers’ recommendations and given to adults and adolescents aged 12 years and up, and it should not be used for more than 10 days (Walsh, 2018). Citing a study from the European Medicine Agency, its short-term success to prevent and treat the common cold was based on “bibliographic data providing scientific evidence of their effectiveness and safety when used in this way, covering a period of at least 10 years in the European Union (EU)” (Walsh, 2018). That track record may be longer than your last relationship, so why not give it a go?

Yet a few notes of caution are in order before trying this flower power. In particular, it’s not recommended in cases of “progressive systemic disorders, autoimmune diseases, immunodeficiencies, immunosuppression and diseases of the white blood cell system. The use in pregnancy and lactation is not recommended unless advised by a doctor” (Walsh, 2018, p. 281). Daisy as in Echinacea, not your Daisy Dukes from college!

E: Exercise: Regular exercise is paramount in challenging the common cold. O’Connor (2016) uncovers how it “increases white blood cells, which fight bacteria and viruses” (p. 42). Hit the gym, walk around the neighborhood, or Zumba like Shakira because “Hips Don’t Lie!” Exercise is critical since it can protect us against stress hormones like cortisol, which can detonate our immune systems. Citing one major study, O’Connor (2016) illustrates that “we’re twice as likely to get sick if chronically stressed out” (p. 44). Who’s next in line for that treadmill?
